Growing up in a family of Steelers fans has always been a chaotic experience. All my life, I grew up watching the Pittsburgh Steelers. You can say I have seen a lot of different types of fans, but there is so much diversity among this fan group. These fans are so committed to this team. I have never seen anything like this before. As I was developing my fandom research, I realized how many people go above and beyond when it comes to supporting the Pittsburgh Steelers. Diving deep into the Steelers fandom it comes to show and highlight the most surprising things.
The first thing I have learned about the Steelers Fandom is how many fans have superstitions or rituals before the game. Some fans' rituals are simple, but others are kind of crazy. Stryker shared, “I must put black and gold first thing out of bed, including my Terrible Towel. On gamedays, when the weather is cool, I wear my Terrible Gentleman suit with a Terrible towel tie, yellow dress shoes, and a black and gold fedora, Stryker described. I only broke out my Myron Cope commemorative towel for the playoffs”. This shows how detailed the fans are when it comes to superstitions on game day. Another fan named Justin described, “I really don't have any rituals. I just must wear a Steelers jersey, and it must be on before the game. If I get some type of food for away games (I always watch the game from my house for away games), if they win, I keep getting it. Can't change until there is a loss. I had a ton of pizza last year, Justin said. This is a less chaotic way to show what people do before the Pittsburgh Steelers play.
The next surprising thing I found during my research is how many events Steelers fans can attend. These fans attend these events to show how big fans they are, and you can be any age to attend. For example, the Steelers host a youth football training camp where kids of all ages come and learn basic drills, meet some of the players, and even get autographs from some of the players. This can make a huge impact on the kids' lives, and they can even show their love and support to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Another event that women fans can attend is the SteelHers event. This event is were woman all over the world come and show their love and support for the Steelers. I think this is a great event because most people think that only males can be fans.
Finally, the last surprising thing is how committed Steelers fans can be to decorate there homes with memorabilia and even having a whole torso tattoo. These fans are committed to going all out to show their love and support. I have never seen fans go all out for any other team but the Pittsburgh Steelers. It is really awesome to see what Steeler fans do and what involvement will expand next.
